Advantages of Cloud Computing
1. Trade Capital Expense for Variable Expense 2. Benefit from economies of scale 3. Stop guessing capacity 4. Increase agility 5. Stop spending money on maintaining data centers. 6. Go global in minutes
Aurora
Amazon
Types of Cloud Computing
- IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) - PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) - SaaS (Software-as-a-Service)
AWS Cloud Infrastructure
1. Regions 2. Availability Zones 3. Edge Locations
Ways to Access AWS
1. Command Line 2. Console 3. SDK
Root Account
Original email account used to create AWS account. Has full access. Should have an MFA, and IAM roles should be made and used instead if possible.
User Groups
Created in IAM. Set permissions for multiple users. Contain user policies.
User Policies
JSON key value pairs that provide rules to what a user or group can do in AWS.
S3
Simple Storage Service
Simple Storage Service
Fully redundant data storage for object-based storage. (Images, files, static web pages, etc.)
Bucket
A location to store objects in S3. Similar to a directory in computer. Each bucket has a globally unique name, and can be accessed globally.
Glacier
Similar to S3, but for long term storage. Cheaper, but requires larger files and takes 3-5 hours to retrieve files.
S3 Security
1. Bucket Policies - Apply to a bucket. 2. Access Control Lists - Apply to individual objects.
S3 Transfer Acceleration
Uses edge locations to upload files.
CloudFront
Content-Delivery Network (CDN) service from AWS. Uses edge locations to cache files.
CloudFront Origin
The origin of all files that the CDN will distribute. Can be S3, EC2, ELB, or Route 53.
Distribution
1. Web distribution - Collection of Edge locations used for Cloudfront websites. 2. RTMP - Specific Cloudfront edge locations used for streaming.
CloudFront Cache
Eventually correct. Older versions can be invalidated immediately, for a fee.
EC2
Elastic Compute Cloud
Elastic Compute Cloud
Virtual Servers on the cloud.
EC2 Pricing Models
1. On Demand 2. Spot 3. Reserved 4. Dedicated
On Demand EC2
Charged as needed. Most expensive but most agile.
Spot EC2
Bought by bid and only temporary. Cheapest but very few use cases.
Reserved EC2
Paid all or partly ahead of time for 1 or 3 years. Cheapest besides spot. Most reliable.
Dedicated EC2
Own specific serves in cloud. Expensive and obly used for corner cases.
EBS
Elastic Block Storage. Disk in the cloud. Block based.
EBS Volumes
1. General Purpose SSD 2. Provisioned IOPS SSD 3. Throughput Optimized HDD 4. Cold Hard Disk HDD
IAM Roles vs. Access Keys
Roles are easier to manage and track then access keys.
RDS
Relational Database Service
RDS Features
1. Multi AZ for disaster recovery 2. Read Replicas for performance
DynamoDB
Predictable and Scalable NoSQL Data Store
Types of Cloud Deployment
1. Public 2. Hybrid 3. Private
EMR
Elastic Map Reduce (Big data service, can use Hadoop etc.)
Redshift
Amazon's proprietary big data service. Used for business intelligence and data warehousing.
AWS Free Services
VPC Elastic Beanstalk CloudFormation IAM Auto Scaling Opsworks Consolidated Billing (Anything these target or provision is not free)
Support Plans
-Basic -Developer -Business -Enterprise
Basic Support
Free, only deal with billing issues and emergencies on AWS end.

Consolidated Billing
Allows all billing in one place for ease of use Allows multiple accounts to share reserved instance pricing, etc.
AWS Quick Start
Creates a combination of AWS resources for the user to quickly start operations.
AWS Cost Calculators
1. Simply Monthly Calculator (Estimated cost of specific products by month.) 2. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Calculator - Compares current private cloud costs to projected costs of switching to AWS public cloud.
Shared Responsibility Model
Aws manages security OF the cloud. User manages security IN the cloud.
WAF
Web Application Firewall
Web Application Firewall
A special type of firewall that looks more deeply into packets that carry HTTP traffic.
AWS Shield
Managed DDOS protection service. Standard (Free) vs Advanced.
Inspector
Product installed on EC2 to evaluate security.
Trusted Advisor
Looks at a range of metrics on a range of AWS products for security, pricing, best practice, etc.
