14What PPE may be required when handling hazardous materials?
A:

Required PPE depends on the specific hazard and is listed in SDS Section 8. It may include: chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles or face shield, chemical splash apron or suit, respiratory protection (air-purifying or supplied-air respirator), steel-toed boots, and hearing protection if applicable.

15What are the four levels of HAZMAT PPE?
A:

Level A: Fully encapsulating suit with SCBA (highest protection). Level B: Chemical splash suit with SCBA (highest respiratory, lower skin). Level C: Chemical splash suit with air-purifying respirator (known contaminant, adequate concentration). Level D: Standard work uniform (no respiratory or skin hazard — nuisance only).

16What is the proper procedure for a chemical spill?
A:

Alert others in the area, evacuate if necessary, avoid contact with the spill, consult the SDS for specific guidance, use appropriate PPE, contain the spill using absorbent materials or dikes (if trained and safe to do so), report to the supervisor and emergency response team, and do NOT flush unknown chemicals down drains.

20What is the NFPA 704 diamond?

21What is chemical incompatibility?

22What are the general rules for chemical storage?

Store chemicals by hazard class (not alphabetically), keep incompatibles separated, store flammables in approved flammable storage cabinets, keep corrosives on low shelves with secondary containment, maintain proper ventilation, keep containers sealed when not in use, label all containers, and follow SDS Section 7 for specific requirements.

23What is secondary containment?
A:

Secondary containment is a system designed to catch and contain chemical spills or leaks from the primary container. It must hold at least 110% of the largest container's volume (or 10% of total volume, whichever is greater). Examples include dikes, berms, drip trays, and double-walled containers.

24What is the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL)?

A PEL is the maximum amount or concentration of a chemical that a worker may be exposed to under OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910.1000). It is usually expressed as a Time-Weighted Average (TWA) over an 8-hour workday. Employers must keep exposures below PELs using engineering controls, administrative controls, and PPE.

25What is a Time-Weighted Average (TWA)?

26What is a Short-Term Exposure Limit (STEL)?

A STEL is the maximum concentration of a chemical a worker can be exposed to for a short period (usually 15 minutes) without experiencing adverse effects. It is higher than the TWA-PEL but has a time restriction. No more than four STEL exposures per day are permitted, with at least 60 minutes between exposures.

27What is an IDLH concentration?
A:

Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) is the maximum airborne concentration from which a worker could escape within 30 minutes without experiencing irreversible health effects or escape-impairing symptoms. At or above IDLH concentrations, only supplied-air respiratory protection (SCBA or airline) may be used.

28What are the routes of chemical exposure?
A:

The four routes are: 1) Inhalation (breathing in vapors, dusts, fumes — most common route), 2) Skin/Eye absorption (contact with liquids, dusts, vapors), 3) Ingestion (eating, drinking, or smoking in contaminated areas), 4) Injection (puncture wounds, cuts contaminated with chemicals).

29What is the difference between acute and chronic health effects?
A:

Acute effects occur immediately or shortly after a single exposure (burns, nausea, dizziness). Chronic effects develop over time from repeated or prolonged exposure (cancer, organ damage, respiratory disease). SDSs Section 11 describes both types of toxicological effects for the chemical.

30What is a health hazard vs. a physical hazard?
A:

A health hazard is a chemical classified as posing risk to health (carcinogen, toxic, irritant, sensitizer, reproductive toxin, organ toxicant). A physical hazard is a chemical classified as posing physical risk (flammable, explosive, oxidizer, corrosive to metals, compressed gas, self-reactive). A chemical can be both.

31What should you do if a hazardous chemical contacts your skin?
A:

Immediately remove contaminated clothing and flush the affected area with large amounts of water for at least 15-20 minutes (unless the SDS specifies otherwise — some chemicals react with water). Do NOT use neutralizing agents unless specifically directed by the SDS. Seek medical attention. Report the exposure.

32What should you do if a hazardous chemical contacts your eyes?
A:

Immediately flush eyes with clean water or eyewash solution for at least 15-20 minutes, holding eyelids open. Remove contact lenses during flushing if easily done. Do NOT rub eyes. Seek immediate medical attention. Know the location of the nearest eyewash station before working with chemicals.

33What is an eyewash station requirement?
A:

OSHA requires that eyewash stations and emergency showers be provided within 10 seconds of travel time (approximately 55 feet) from any area where employees may be exposed to corrosive or severely irritating chemicals. Stations must be tested weekly and inspected annually per ANSI Z358.1.

34What is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?
A:

MSDS was the previous format for chemical hazard information before GHS adoption. It had no standardized format. Under the 2012 HAZCOM update, MSDSs were replaced by the standardized 16-section Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Employers should have converted all MSDSs to SDSs by June 1, 2015.

35What is the employer's responsibility regarding container labeling?
A:

Employers must ensure all incoming containers of hazardous chemicals are labeled with the GHS elements (product name, signal word, hazard statements, pictograms, precautionary statements, supplier info). Workplace (secondary) containers must also be labeled with at least the product identifier and applicable hazard warnings.

36When can a secondary container be unlabeled?
A:

A secondary container may be unlabeled ONLY if the employee who transferred the chemical will be the sole user AND will use the entire contents during their work shift. If the container can be accessed by anyone else, or the chemical is not used immediately, it MUST be labeled with at minimum the product identifier and hazard warning.

37What is the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG)?
A:

The ERG is a DOT publication used by first responders during the initial phase of a HAZMAT transportation incident. It helps identify hazards and recommended protective actions based on the UN identification number or placard. The orange-bordered pages provide specific guidance for each material.

38What information does SDS Section 2 contain?
A:

Section 2: Hazard(s) Identification includes the GHS classification, signal word, hazard statements, pictograms, precautionary statements, and any hazards not otherwise classified. It provides the summary of all hazard information that appears on the label.

39What information does SDS Section 9 contain?
A:

Section 9: Physical and Chemical Properties includes appearance, odor, pH, melting/freezing point, boiling point, flash point, evaporation rate, flammability, vapor pressure, vapor density, specific gravity, solubility, auto-ignition temperature, and decomposition temperature. These properties are critical for safe handling.

40What is a flash point?
A:

The flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor to form an ignitable mixture with air near the surface of the liquid. A lower flash point means greater flammability risk. Class I flammable liquids have flash points below 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C).

41What are the responsibilities of employees under HAZCOM?
A:

Employees must: attend HAZCOM training, follow safe handling procedures, wear required PPE, read labels and SDSs before using chemicals, never remove or deface labels, report spills and exposures, know emergency procedures, properly store and dispose of chemicals, and report any concerns about chemical hazards to their supervisor.
